Many parents lose sleep over the thought of sending their child to daycare for the first time. I remember feeling the same way when my 12-month-old started daycare. Questions like, “Will my child adapt to the new environment?”, “Is it okay while I’m still breastfeeding?”, and “Will they be comfortable with strangers?” constantly filled my mind.
But over time, daycare brought significant positive changes to our family life. It became a wonderful opportunity for both me and my child to grow. Today, I’m sharing my experience along with some helpful tips to make this transition smoother for you.
1. Start with Preparing Yourself
The first few days were incredibly tough for me. Dropping my baby off each morning felt heartbreaking. But after a few days, I noticed that my child was getting used to the new environment, enjoying time with friends, and having fun at daycare.
One thing that helped was bringing familiar items from home. Soft, comfortable clothing, a favorite blanket, or a cherished toy provided a sense of security in the new environment. Additionally, staying calm and positive helped my child adapt faster. Babies often pick up on their parents’ emotions, so showing confidence and trust in the daycare staff can go a long way.
2. Essential Items to Pack for Daycare
Making sure your child is well-prepared for daycare is key to ensuring a smooth experience. Here’s a checklist of essential items that worked for us:
- Comfortable and Extra Clothing: Kids are active throughout the day, so comfortable clothes are a must. Extra clothes are also essential since spills and messes are bound to happen.\n - Avauma's soft and stretchy bodysuits and pajamas are designed for all-day comfort and are perfect for an active daycare routine.\n- Nap Essentials: Nap time can be challenging in a new environment. Sending along a familiar blanket or pillow can make it easier for your child to rest comfortably.\n- Personal Hygiene Items: A water bottle, diapers, wipes, and other personal items are daycare must-haves.
Be sure to check with your daycare for any specific requirements or additional items to pack.
3. Daycare: A Time for Growth for Both Parent and Child
The daycare transition isn’t just for your baby—it’s also a time for parents to grow. Initially, I struggled with the idea of spending time away from my child, but eventually, I learned to use that time to focus on myself and recharge.
Daycare also provides valuable opportunities for your child to grow socially and emotionally. The new activities and social interactions encouraged my little one to become more independent and creative. Watching my child thrive in a new environment has been incredibly rewarding.
4. Cherishing Quality Time Together
One of the most significant changes after starting daycare was the improvement in the quality of the time we spent together. Before, an entire day with my baby could feel overwhelming at times, but now, our time together feels more intentional and joyful.
Whether it’s playing together after work, reading books before bedtime, or taking a relaxing stroll, these moments have become the highlights of my day. They remind me of how meaningful our time together truly is.

5. Don’t Worry—You’ve Got This
Sending your baby to daycare is a big change for both parents and children, but with proper preparation, it can become an enjoyable part of your daily routine. Watching your child grow, learn, and adapt to new experiences is one of the most fulfilling aspects of parenthood.
While the initial days may be tough, remember that this is a shared journey of growth for you and your child. With patience, trust, and love, this transition can become a warm and positive chapter in your family’s story.
